Advanced Biotechnology Incubator Expansion & Renovation | SUNY Downstate



The Advanced Biotechnology Incubator, adjacent to SUNY Downstate Medical Center in the East Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY, is located in the Downstate Technology Park, the cornerstone of Downstate’s Biotechnology Initiative. Croxton Collaborative Architects, in association with NK Architects, has recently completed the Phase III expansion – a 26,300 SF addition to an existing two-phased, 3 story, 24,000 SF building which currently consists of medical offices, tenant labs and tenant offices.

Overseen by Downstate Technology Center, Inc., a non-profit organization, the Advanced Biotechnology Incubator Phase III facility, located in the Empire Zone, will offer start-up companies an additional 19 wet/dry lab spaces of various flexible sizes, an office suite and conference room on every floor, a south-facing multi-purpose/lunchroom with a balcony and views to the Downstate main campus, a public lobby with adjacent flexible multi-purpose space wired for advanced audio-visual capability and a pantry for staging catered public events. Tenants also have access to facilities and resources on the Downstate campus which include a library, vivarium, specialized equipment, technician training, clinical trials and seminars.

Phase III, designed as a high performance building, is currently pursuing LEED NC Silver certification & NYSERDA funding. The designed energy efficient building systems include heat recovery for AHU and modular chiller, condensing boilers, daylighting controls, an integrated building automation system and demand control ventilation in the public spaces. Labs are fit out with fume hood capability.
